Abstract

Maria Nartonowicz-Kot THE DISPUTE CONCERNING TRADITION. COMMEMORATION OF THE INDEPENDENCE DAY IN ŁÓDŹ DURING IN THE FIRST DECADE OF POLISH REBORN The day of November 11th 1918 became one of the most important date in the whole modern history to all Polish people. This day has been always connected with the reborn of Poland country after the 123 years of annexation. This article try to describe how this anniversary was celebrated in Lodz during the first 10 years of Poland Reborn. It is worth to remember that until 1926 such commemorations didn’t have any official cannon. It was changed after the May Coup d’Etat and new Józef Piłsudski circular in which he acknowledge this holiday as the national day (formally it was done at 1937). In this article I also take up the issues relating to the political discussion about the actual date of regain the independence and choice political power which took the greatest role in this process. In this debate the most important were two fractions: first was gather around Józef Piłsudski and recognize him as the creator of the country, second, national group, proved that Poland owe independence to Roman Dmowski and Entanta countries. The minor roles in this dispute played polish socialists and conservatives. The seizure of power by the sanation ended the conflict about the independence symbols. At the political theatre stayed only supporters of Józef Piłsudski…
