Abstract

[Objective] This study aims to explore the impact of the withdrawal of land contract management right on rural household income, and to provide decision-making reference for further promoting the policy of compensated withdrawal of land contract management rights. [Method] Based on the survey data of 718 rural households in the national pilot zone for rural reform in China, the endogenous switching regression model (ESRM) was used to analyze the impact of land contract management right exit on the income of farmers under the “counterfactual” framework. [Result] Based on the counterfactual hypothesis, farmers who have withdrawn their land contract management rights would decrease by 41.9% in annual average total income of household if they had choosen not to withdraw, that is, the withdrawal of land contract management rights can significantly promote rural household income. In addition, the policy of withdrawing land contract management rights has the highest income increasing effect on rural households in the eastern region of China, and the income increasing effect on the new generation of farmers is stronger than that of the older generation. [Conclusion] On the basis of fully guaranteeing the land rights of farmers, we need prudently promote the withdrawal land contract management rights with compensation, optimize the allocation of rural land resource, and provide a channel for farmers who have the conditions to leave the land to realize the value of land rights.
