Abstract

Wleń is a small town in the District of Lwówek (Lower Silesia Voivodship). Here the oldest brick castle in Silesia and one of the oldest in Poland is located. Prince Henry and his wife Hedwig repeatedly stayed in the Wleń Castle in years 1216, 1218 and 1220. The Duchess, while at the castle, often descended to the village lying at the foot of the Castle Hill, to take care of poor people there. In Wleń she founded St. Nicholas’ Church, which was built in 1217. Since 2003 Saint Hedwig of Silesia has been the patroness of the School in Wleń. For two years the students worked on the choice of the patron saint for their school. The ceremony of giving the school its name took place on 17th October 2003. Three years later a path was opened, along which you can see 6 stones commemorating Saint Hedwig of Silesia. In May 2007, the act of Saint Hedwig relics’ enthronement took place in Saint Nicholas Church in Wleń. Every year, students of the Wleń school go on pilgrimages to Trzebnica, where they take part in competitions and rallies. The school hosts history conferences dedicated, among others, to its patroness. In October the feast of patron saint is solemnly celebrated. On that day a historical Parade and Saint Hedwig’s Fete take place. All these actions are taken by the school with a view to popularizing the person of Saint Hedwig and her relationship with Wleń.
