The effect of controlled breathing on short-term cardiac autonomic activity in amateur athletes taking part in a 100 km run
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity monitoring in individuals undertaking strenuous exercise is important from the clinical point of view. It should be taken into consideration that some ANS parameters can be particularly depenedent on additional factors such as clinical status of the examinee, testing methodology and laboratory environment. Hence, the issue of standardisation of the ANS testing methodology is very important for clinical reasons. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the controlled breathing at 0,23 Hz on ANS parameters in amateur athletes taking part in a 100 km run. Material and Methods. In 7 athletes (aged 42 ± 15 years) the assessment of mean heart period, as well as baroreflex sensivity (BRS) and heart rate variability (HRV) analyses, were performed twice: on the day before the 100 km run (Recording 1) and one day after the run (Recording 2). BRS and HRV analyses were based on 10-minute arterial blood pressure and HP recordings with spontaneous breathing (REC) and with breathing controlled at 0,23 Hz (RC). Results. Under controlled breathing, normalized high frequency power (Hfnu) increased, whereas normalized low frequency power (Lfnu) and ratio LF to HF (LF/HF) decreased, without any changes in BRS. No differences were found with regard to measured parameters in Recording 2 when compared to Recording 1, independent of methodology (REC vs RC). Conclusions. The controlled breathing at 0,23 Hz significantly alters the short-term HRV parameters, showing no effect on BRS values. These results can be of practical importance while selecting appropriate methods for short- term ANS assessment.
