Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 3
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to characterize the ways of maintaining oral hygiene in athletes involved in different sports disciplines as compared to the control group (the individuals not involved in any sport discipline) as well as the effect of non-standard care provided for professional athletes, as compared to non-athletes, on the choice of additional toiletries improving the condition of the oral cavity. The sample comprised 215 athletes aged 15-36 years. The studied group comprised Polish National Team athletes. The control group comprised 143 individuals who were not professionally involved in any sport discipline. The study group included competitors involved in the following disciplines: football, handball, wrestling and boxing. The basic research tool used in the study was a questionnaire and examination of oral cavity condition, carried out by a stomatologist. The questionnaire was designed according to the study plan and contained questions concerning hygienic habits- the frequency of brushing teeth during the day, using additional oral hygiene accessories and agents and dietary habits. The study found that professional athletes were more concerned about oral hygiene. They brushed their teeth on average 2.3 times a day while the control group subjects did it only 2.15 times a day and this difference turned out statistically significant. As for using additional accessories or agents to maintain oral hygiene, Polish National Team athletes obtained definitely worse results than the control group. The results suggest that despite non-standard dental care provided for professional athletes, including obligatory yearly follow up combined with briefing on oral hygiene, the awarness of oral hygiene among competitors involved in various sport disicplines is still unsatisfactory and requires further successive education.
