Abstract

The history of the most important professional periodical devoted to libraries, from the moment of its beginning to the early 21st century, is the subject matter of the monograph by Zbigniew Gruszka („Przegląd Biblioteczny”. Monograﬁ a, Łódź – Warsaw: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego and Wydawnictwo Stowarzyszenia Bibliotekarzy Polskich, 2012). The asset of this book is the attempt at an analysis of the content of this periodical, considered in the long perspective, performed with a repetitive questionnaire, and with the use of quantitative methodology. But the book also has signiﬁ cant drawbacks. Its chief problems are: insufﬁ cient historical contextualisation of the discussed issues, failure to consider much of relevant archival materials, and leaving out of sight important political entanglements of the editorial body of the periodical, and of the librarian milieu in general, the press organ of which was Przegląd Biblioteczny (particularly, during the communist times in Poland). Hence, the monograph, is lacking in a validated assessment of the periodical. The reader does not receive a substantiated opinion on the scientiﬁ c quality of the periodical, and of the texts published in its volumes.
