The multidisciplinary treatment after mandibular resection due to neoplasm

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 3

Abstract

This paper presents the problem of multidisciplinary treatment of patients after mandibular resection due to neoplasm. The undesirable effects of surgical treatment, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, observed during medical care of patients with head and neck neoplastic diseases, and the methods for their alleviation are presented. The effect of neoplastic diseases and their treatment on the psycho-social behaviour of patients and their families is also discussed. The involvement of psychological and psychiatric care should be a standard approach in the management of these problems. In this article the case of the patient after mandibular resection due to carcinoma planoepitheliale of trigonum retromolare is presented. The prosthetic rehabilitation is described step by step and may serve as an example of interdisciplinary treatment of the patient’s stomatognathic system. The abnormal position of mandibula observed in the patient made it necessary to reconstruct occlusion with miotherapy. The final stage of the treatment involved prosthetic restoration with endosseus implants. This appeared to be a significant contribution to the patient’s stomatognatic system efficacy.
