THE REASONS OF CANDIDATES OF PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER DO NOT WANT TO BE A TEACHER

Abstract

Pre-service training process of the teacher significantly affects their active professional lives. In order to be a successful professional, teacher should love their job and advance their attitudes towards teaching profession positively. The purpose of this research examining the reasons why the candidates of primary school teacher who are unwilling to be a teacher while they have just months before beginning although they have took both practical and theoretical teaching education and they have been successful in their courses during four years in a faculty that grows teacher. The research was designed as a qualitative case study. During the interview of teacher candidates, semi-structured interview method was utilized. Study group is formed by six senior students of Primary School Teacher Department of a state university from Ankara who are clearly stated that they do not want to be a teacher and they will not choose teaching as a profession. The necessary data for the research was gathered in December, 2014. These data was analyzed with descriptive analysis technique. Analyzing the data has built under seven fundamental dimension; descriptions of teachers and teachers’ characteristics, social status of primary school teachers and their salary, their reasons and factors of choosing the primary school teacher as a job, their academic achievements and self efficacy perceptions, affects of the university education over the perspective of teaching profession, their basic reasons about unwillingness and comparison between their favorite jobs and primary school teaching. In accordance with the results of the research, candidates have positive attitudes about descriptions of teacher. In their opinion, the salary of teacher is not enough. They also think that social status of teacher low and society do not show respect toward teacher. Any of the candidates intentionally choose teaching as a job. For this reason; their academic success, self-efficacy perception, training process etc. could not change their unwillingness. Candidates prefer other professions which they have high positive attitudes, sympathies and willingness and believe that they will be happy.
