Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 11
Abstract
The research design of this study is correlation and the aim was the investigation the relationship between self-esteem and goal orientation with self-handicapping. The studied community included all Chamran University students who studied in bachelor’s degree in 2011-2012 academic year. 300 sample subjects selected through random relative sampling method. In this study Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire (1965), goal orientation questionnaire and Self-handicapping scale was used. The descriptive, correlational coefficient, multiple regression analysis and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to analysis of data. The results show that there is a negative and significant relationship between self-esteem and self-handicapping. In addition, performance-avoidance (PAV) and mastery-avoidance (MAV) predict selfhandicapping in positive way and mastery-approach (MAP) goal orientation predicts self-handicapping in negative way. Moreover, the result indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between PAV and MAV goal orientation with the two kinds of self-handicapping (claimed and behavioral); but there is a negative and significant relationship between performance approach (PAP) and MAP goal orientation with behavioral self-handicapping. Side finding show that there is a significant difference between claimed self-handicapping in the girls and boys students.
