The reproductive toxicity hazard identification of the eight pesticide carbendasim samples

Abstract
Objective. The purpose of this study was to assess and evaluation in the experiments gonadotox-ic activity of eight samples of carbendazim generics manufactured by various Chinese companies. Methods. Carbendazim was administered to the Wistar Han rat males and females orally by gavage in dose levels of 0,0-1,0-2,5-5,0-25,0 mg/kg body weight five days per week for 10-11 weeks for males and 9 weeks for females. Two weeks before the end of the exposure period, the females' functional status of ovaries was assessed. The morpho-functional parameters of the sexual glands in males were evaluated at the end of the exposure period. After the scheduled period of exposure treated animals were mated with untreated females and males to investigate the reproductive perfomance. Results. All eight samples of pesticides had a toxic effect on the reproductive function of male rats at a dose of 25,0 mg/kg body weight. Pathological changes mainly affect the morpho-functional parameters of the testes and epididymis, as well as the processes of spermatogenesis, which leads to a reduced viability of the embryos F1 generation at the stage of the preimplantation development and to a damage of the fertilizing function of the sperm in males. Conclusions. The No-Observed-Effect-level (NOEL) for carbendazim reproductive toxicity under the experimental conditions in this study is a dose of 1,0 mg/ kg body weight.
