TYPOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF EPIDEICTIC DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of epideictic discourse which has unique opportunities in terms of transmitting attitudes about the evaluation of certain events / phenomena, models of desired / acceptable social behavior, influencing the formation of personal and collective identities. We have identified and described typological characteristics of epideictic discourse, which makes an epideictic speech in honor of any ceremonial event, involves particular hearers’ expectations, is of non-improvised, mostly controlled nature, and may contain the elements of other linguistic styles. Summarizing given above the typological attributes of epideictic discourse and taking as a basis known in linguistics typological criteria of differentiation the types and subtypes of discourses, we have made up an extended list of specific features of epideictic discourse. By formal attributes – it is a spoken discourse; by type of speaking – it is a monologue; by addressee orientation – it is an institutional discourse with the elements of personal or everyday discourse; by communicative principles – it is a harmonizing discourse with the elements of argumentative and persuasive discourses; by functional and informative component – it is a combination of informative (with the elements of emotional and evaluation) and phatic discourses; by functional-stylistic aspect (compliance with speech registers) – it can be formal and informal, official with the elements of journalistic and colloquial styles.
