YOUNG ADULTS’ SELF-ESTEEM VERSUS PARENTING STYLES IN THE FAMILY OF ORIGIN

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 46, Issue 4

Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes the relationship between the retrospective perceptions of parenting styles that parents used with their adolescent children and their self-esteem in early adulthood. The participants of the study were 50 men and 50 women aged 20-30. The Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory (MSEI) was used to measure self-esteem, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) was used to measure perceived parenting styles. The findings of the study indicate that the parenting style perceived as authoritative is important for self-esteem in adulthood. There is a positive correlation between the parenting style perceived as authoritative and women’s self-esteem in the area of being loved, leadership skills and moral self-acceptance, as well as men’s self-esteem in the area of physical attractiveness. There is a negative correlation between the parenting style perceived as permissive and men’s self-esteem in the area of vitality. Parents’ authoritarian style was not important for the development of the young adults’ self-esteem. The relationships between the components of self-esteem and perceived parenting styles found in the study confirm that mothers and fathers play a different role in the development of their children’s self-esteem.
