Cost Variation Analysis Of Various Macrolides Available In India

Abstract
The study was undertaken with the aim to compare the cost of various Macrolides of different brands (mostly branded generics) compared with the same molecule by calculating the percentage variation of cost. Price of different Macrolide preparations were reviewed from Drug today July –Sept 2017 and drugsupdate.com for analysis. Maximum and minimum price difference of the same drug manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies was calculated. Drug formulations manufactured by only one company and those whose price could not be obtained from the drug today and drugsupdate.com were excluded from analysis. The cost variation is more than 100% for most macrolide preparations. There is wide variation in the cost of different macrolide preparations which increases economic burden on our country. Government of India should take steps to control the cost of drugs. Physicians should prescribe low cost drugs to improve compliance to drug therapy.
