Estudo de usuários de web e-mail: a busca pela informação através dos portais eletrônicos

Abstract
This study aims to analyze two types of approach – traditional and alternative – for user studies. The instruments for data collection that were appropriate to each type of approach were: the questionnaire, in the traditional approach, and the interview, in the alternative one. As a result, the former failed to establish a closer dialogue with the user, due to the limitation of the answers, since they were defined. Unlike the questionnaire, the interview enabled meeting in more details the informational needs of each user, and understanding the way the process of search and use is done. Thus, electronic portals through which users seek information were verified in order to evidence if such portals are the same ones providing the web e-mails of users, since these electronic portals should also enable the supply of their informational needs. In conclusion, most of the subjects of this research does not use, for various reasons, their providers and primary email to search information. The results showed that the first approach does not recognize the individual needs of each user, as they are merely the objectivity of a statistical treatment. In contrast, the second approach recognizes the subjectivity and thus the needs of users.
