HYDRONYMS OF MULTICULTURAL REGION: DIFFICULTIES OF ETYMOLOGY

Abstract

The article describes the etymology of the hydronyms Bahy, Hladysh, Karaban, Pradyna, Sula, Suricha, which were localized in the Lower Dniester river basin. The aim of this research is to describe the linguistic features of structure of these names, which were formed in a policultural (Slavic — Turkic — Eastern Romance) historical and geographical area. The task of research consists in the structural and semantic analysis of hydronyms Bahy, Hladysh, Karaban, Pradyna, Sula, Suricha within bounds of the chronologically polyglot toponymic system. A general conclusion: 1. Analysis of formal structure of hydronyms both in the system of Slavic and Turkic and Eastern Romance word-form confirms their etymological ambiguity. 2. The analysis of hydronyms Bahy, Hladysh, Karaban, Pradyna, Sula, Suricha in the local hydronymal system enables to explain them to the names genetically Turkic. 3. Structural and semantic interpretation of hydronym Hladysh taking into account linguistic and extralinguistic factors proves to his Eastern Romance genesis. 4. Analysis of phonetic and word building structures of hydronyms Karaban and Pradyna in the system of related educations from other regions of Ukraine and Slaviñ gives more linguistic arguments for their Slavic etymology. Research prospect: Hydronymy of the Lower Dniester river basin was formed in the process of polyglot interaction in different periods of history of this region. It should be stressed that effectiveness of etymological analysis of hydronyms this multicultural region relies on the thorough study of history of local linguistic continuum.
