Identification and biocontrol potential of antagonist bacteria HP8-1 against Phytophthora root rot of tomato
Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2024, Vol 58, Issue 1
Abstract
[Objective] In order to explore biocontrol potential of HP8-1 in tomatoes, providing excellent biocontrol resources for the biological control of Phytophthora root rot of tomato. [Method] The strain HP8-1 was identified through morphological observations, physiological and biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA sequence analysis and explored its antifungal effect on plant pathogens, biological function and its rhizosphere colonization ability in tomato. The control effect of HP8-1 against Phytophthora root rot of tomato and the influence on tomato growth were measured by pot experiments. [Result] The strain HP8-1 was identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa, which has antifungal activity on a variety of plant pathogens and biological functions with decomposing of phosphorus, protein, cellulose, and producing siderophore and indoleacetic acid. HP8-1 has stable colonization ability in tomato roots and rhizosphere soil, especially under the condition of inoculation with Phytophthoa capsica, the colo-nization density tended to increase and was significantly higher than that without inoculation. In the pot experiment, HP8-1 performed the successful control effect against Phytophthoa root rot of tomato and the control efficiencies was 57.41%. At the same time, the treatment with HP8-1 significantly promoted the growth of tomato, and increased chlorophyll content and root activity. [Conclusion] The strain HP8-1 can survive stably in tomato root and rhizosphere soil, suppress Phytophthora root rot of tomato and promote tomato growth, which is a biocontrol resource with great potential.
