L’« eurojargon » et sa variante française

Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2013, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

As a sociolect used by representatives in EU institutions (Council, Commission, Parliament), the “eurojargon” or “eurofog” is a transnational superpartes language, which allows EU institutions to normalise political and legal communication. However, the term “jargon” refers to a critical approach to this language that is not very transparent and not easy to understand for the European citizen. Indeed, this kind of speak can only be comprehended by EU specialists and that’s why it can be regarded as a sort of Orwellian newspeak. The aim of the present paper is to describe the principal aspects of eurospeak, especially of its French variant. In fact, not only several EU member States speak French, but also many representatives of other EU countries prefer using French as lingua franca and translators can use it as a “bridge language”. We will analyse this variant and will observe “colinguistic” relationships referring to French within the European communication area. This area is indeed characterised by a cross-cultural communication whose dynamics need further studies.
