Parents’ Views on the Barriers to Parent-School Collaboration: Basis for an Action Plan
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2024, Vol 19, Issue 5
Abstract
This study delved into parents' perspectives regarding the obstacles they encounter when engaging with their children's schools. The research was conducted among parents of students enrolled at Baraason Integrated School for the 2023-2024 academic year, from Kindergarten to Grade 10. A carefully designed stratified random sampling method ensured the inclusion of a representative 50 percent of students from each grade level. The study, using a reliable survey with a mean of 2.10, revealed that parents perceive substantial challenges in interacting with schools. Results confirm a widespread consensus on challenges in communication channels, geographical distance, and time constraints. Additionally, parents overwhelmingly perceive extensive collaboration with schools, involving effective communication, support for school involvement, easy information access, and positive interactions with educators and staff. While communication barriers were universally acknowledged, geographical distance and time constraints had substantial impacts, underscoring the need for effective strategies to address these challenges. The analysis of demographic profiles revealed that age, sex, and income have minimal influence on parent-school collaboration, whereas educational background, particularly elementary education with a Regression Coefficient value of -0.321, significantly affects collaboration levels. The study concluded by developing an action plan, "Building Bridges: Empowering Parents and Schools for Success," to overcome barriers to parent-school collaboration.
