Abstract
Jordan Siemianowski THE PROBLEM OF SHIPPING COTTON TO PORTS IN THE POLISH CUSTOMS AREA AND THE APPOINTMENT OF A NORWEGIAN HONORARY VICE-CONSULATE IN LODZ IN 1932 The creation of an honorary vice-consulate in Lodz was essentially linked to the aspirations of the city’s industrial circles to organize the transport of cotton directly to the ports of Gdynia and Gdansk. This was to enable the ports of both Bremen and Hamburg to be bypassed in this transit. However it was more a Norwegian than a Polish effort to facilitate easier transport communications. Two shipowners in particular, Wilhelm Wilhelmsen from Tønsberg and Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab from Bergen, through the branch of their company – Bergenske Baltic Transports Ltd. – in Gdansk, had their part in this. At first the Norwegians proposed Gustav Geyer as the honorary vice-consul, but, due to financial problems, another manufacturer from Lodz – Arno Kindermann – was proposed. More conducive conditions obtained for setting up this Norwegian consulate in 1930. This was reflected in a more positive attitude of the Lodz industrial circles towards the direct shipment of cotton via Gdynia, and the greater interest of the Polish ministry of Trade and Industry. The formation of the Golf-Gdynia Line (cotton line), from the Gulf of Mexico in 1931 by Wilhelm Wilhelmsen and the Swedish Svenska Amerika Mexico Linien ocean-going line, was also not without significance.
