Abstract

The paper focuses on the use of slang in contemporary Romanian Parliamentary discourse. When taken separately, both language phenomena, the political discourse, on the one hand, and slang, on the other hand, were devoted a rich array of studies, but very few of them dealt with the use of slang in political speeches. On a general scale it might be assumed that the use of slang in Parliamentary debates and allocutions is motivated by various extralinguistic factors, such as the social background of the speakers, their age, gender or lev-el of education, that can be evaluated by taking into account that: a) On a historical level, the contemporary Romanian Parliamentary dis-course emerged without the benefit of traditional democratic models of political communication. In contrast with the interwar period (i.e. prior to 1945), when the political discourse was the emblem of the freedom of speech, in the communist era (i.e. between 1945 and 1989), the political language was limited to a so-called wooden language, characterized by a wealth of ideological and linguistic clichés. Consequently, the actual Romanian political discourse is still on its way towards stability; b) On a political level, the Parliamentary discourse mirrors various political ideologies and values, but this is rather ideal than actual in the contemporary Romanian Parliamentary debates and speeches, due to the lack of tradition in this respect; c) On a linguistic level, the contemporary Romanian Parliamentary dis-course sheds light on the precarious levels of education and linguistic awareness of some politicians, whose communicative deliveries are, on occasions, infused with suburban language denoting a feeble political training.
