Journal Title: Българско списание за обществено здраве (Bulgarian Journal of Public Health) - Year 2019, Vol 0, Issue 2
Abstract
This publication presents the results of a research into consumers’ attitudes towards the use of teas. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey design with 400 individuals aged 18-80, who expressed willingness and agreement to complete a questionnaire with guaranteed anonymity, was conducted. Respondents visited the Siana’s Pharmacy in Sofia, within 10 days in 2017. Documentary, sociological and statistical methods were used. Results and discussion: The relative share of respondents who do not make a difference between plant products (PPs) and herbal medicinal products (HMPs) is higher than that of the respondents who make it between these products. Respondents who do not use the PPs have a higher proportion of those who use them (p> 0.05). Teas are the most preferred form of PPs use (93%), most commonly used for „disease prevention“ purposes. The most commonly used tea plant is the valerian. According to 86.8% of the respondents who used the PPs, the plants are harmless. Conclusion: The high percentage of respondents who do not distinguish PPs and HMPs and those who consider the plants to be harmless necessitates intervention activities to inform consumers about the health effects of PPs.
