Sign and lingual unit in the semiological concept of F. de Saussure

Abstract

The biggest achievement and particularity of the concept of F. de Saussure is considered that on the one hand, he defended the bilateral theory of sign and on the other hand, he identified the form of the sign with the psychic linear essence – that is, the acoustic image and not with the sound itself that made the sign psychologically two- sided. However, the problem is that both of these concepts are very simplified, mythologized and they don’t respond to materials of the manuscripts of the scientist himself. The manuscript of Ferdinand de Saussure's book "The dual nature of the linguistic activity ("De l'essence double du langage"), found in 1996 and issued in 2002, allows us to overestimate some of the concept of his theory, in particular the linguist's understanding of the term sign. Criticism of the concept of the sign and its constituents based on the new materials is presented in two points – illuminating the relationship between the sign and the concept and the illumination of the relationship between the sign and the acoustic image. Reflections on these problems have led to the conclusion that the sign is not a combination of concept and acoustic image, it is a meaningful relationship between them. What is commonly called in modern linguistics a sign (linguistic or speech), Saussure often refers to as a lingual fact, lingual unit or lingual phenomenon (fait linguistique, unité linguistique or phénomène linguistique), as well as specifically defined term sème. Single lingual unit in spatial dimension has two aspects, two sides – meaning and form (sign), each of which also has a bilateral relationship. Saying that the terms “signification” and “forme” define this relationship, Saussure used more often than “classic” well-known terms from the “Course of General Linguistics” such as signified and significant. The analysis showed that the basis of all Saussure’s semiotics is the idea of relations of distinction and association which is the actual value system / values.
