STRUGGLE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATES – STRATEGIES TO ATTRACT NEW STUDENTS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

Abstract: The study being discussed is part of a qualitative module carried out as part of a research panel connected with the study on the validity of Educational Value Added. The article describes actions taken by high school principals in connection with the period of population decline that are to attract as many middle school graduates as possible to a given school. The data being discussed was collected in 30 high schools throughout Poland. In each school, interviews with school staff (principals, teachers and auxiliary staff), parents and representatives of the local organ supervising the school were conducted. In addition, group interviews with students and several-day observations were performed. The analyses conducted show that the manner in which the principal handles enrollment is connected with a given school’s educational effectiveness as measured by Educational Value Added. The principals of schools that can be described as “better schools” (those which were categorized as “supportive schools” or “successful schools”) respond to the problem of population decline in a completely different manner than the principals of “poorer schools” (which can be described as “neutral schools” or “schools in need of assistance”). The article describes a set of identified methods of attracting middle school graduates to high schools and analyzes them in the context of the distinguished typology of schools. This article is exploratory, which – we hope – will open a discussion on the phenomenon of strategies used by schools to deal with the period of population decline.
