The effect of the Feldenkrais method on body posture; a case study
Journal Title: Complementary & Alternative Medicine in Science - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Background. Feldenkrais method is an educational method of body self awareness which develops its potential through the movement experience. This method allows, i.a. an observation of typical movement patterns, their conscious analysis and correction through the discovery of new mobility patterns. The aim of the study was to assess posture of two people involved in group sessions with the Feldenkrais method employed. Material and methods. The study involved a woman at the age of 37 years and a man at the age of 42 years. The patients participated in 15-hour group sessions with the Feldenkrais method employed. For the study there were used an apparatus for a computer-based body posture examination MORA 4G and a computer based foot examination CQ ST3D. Also, the photographic material of body posture was assessed. Results. The comparative studies of the patients’ body postures showed: in case of the woman, a slight reduction of postural asymmetry in the shoulder blades and a slight reduction of muscular prominence on the right side of the spine; in case of the man, a slight reduction of postural asymmetry in the shoulders and the shoulder blades level. In the computer based foot examination no significant difference in both cases was shown. The photographic comparative evaluation of the images showed significant changes in both cases in terms of their height, the arms position, the line of the spinous process of a vertebra. Conclusions. The results of the study suggest that the body re education sessions using the Feldenkrais method can complement the previously used ones while introducing to the patients an element of the body awareness oriented towards correction or compensation of faulty posture. However, it seems necessary to continue the observations on the specific role of these methods in the improvement of body posture in a longer period of time and on a larger group of people.
