THE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF CURRICULA OF PROFESSIONAL TOURISM EDUCATION IN TURKEY

Abstract

The article states that current processes of reforming the education in Turkey are carried out in the context of developing the National Qualifications Framework, its adjusting to the European Qualifications Framework in order to unite all education levels and implement a lifelong learning strategy. Based on the analysis of analytical materials, it has been found that the qualifications developed on the national professional standards are closely linked to the curricula of professional training of future hospitality specialists in professional lyceums in Turkey. It has been revealed that the content features of modular education programmes include their orientation towards developing the students’ knowledge, abilities and skills they need to effectively perform the professional duties within such areas as hospitality, catering, entertainment. The subjects are divided into generic, obligatory and optional. It has been concluded that according to one’s needs, financial and technical abilities, the employers’ requirements, a region where an educational institution is located, socioeconomic factors, both structure and content of professional tourism education in Turkey can be improved through establishing new departments, developing integrated courses, introducing new subjects. A systematic updating of modular education programmes for training future hospitality specialists involves correspondence of programme content with qualification requirements and the needs of the hospitality industry, professional orientation of teaching and learning, priority of practice-oriented professional training of future specialists, emphasis on improving the students’ foreign language proficiency, regular reviewing and updating of the curricula based on innovative trends in developing the industry and improving education quality.
