Evaluation of thyroid dysfunction in type II diabetes mellitus

Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorder with its increasing incidence worldwide. Thyroid dysfunction is another common endocrine disorder frequently encountered in clinical practice. The association between diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorder is widely known. Aim and objectives: 1) To know the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. 2) To know the spectrum of thyroid dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methodology: A total of 80 patients with Type 2 DM who were diagnosed on the basis of ADA criteria or who were taking treatment for Diabetes were included in the study. All patients in the study underwent thyroid profile tests for the thyroid status and also target organ evaluation for Diabetes. A detailed history and examination was done on these patients. Results: Out of 80 patients, 30 (37.5%) had thyroid dysfunction. In this study, out of 30 thyroid dysfunction patients, 7 (8.75%) had clinical hypothyroidism, 20 (25%) had subclinical hypothyroidism and 3 (3.75%) diabetics had hyperthyroidism. Thyroid dysfunction was seen more in female 22 (57.89%) cases than in male 8 (19.05%) cases. Conclusion: The present study showed a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction (37.5%) among the diabetic patients. Subclinical hypothyroidism was more common than clinical hypothyroidism.
